Quick answer: Almost all freight entering Mexico arrives through one of four seaports - Manzanillo, Lazaro Cardenas, Veracruz and Altamira - or across one of the northern land borders, chiefly Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Mexicali and Reynosa. From those gateways, road corridors connect to the Bajio, the Valley of Mexico, the northeastern industrial belt and the southeast. Choosing the right entry point usually saves more time and money than negotiating the freight rate.
Which entry point should my cargo use?
Manzanillo, Colima. Mexico's busiest container port and the main Pacific gateway. Best for Asian imports destined for Guadalajara, the Bajio and central Mexico.
Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. The other Pacific deep-water option. Frequently less congested than Manzanillo, with a strong rail connection inland, and a sensible alternative when Manzanillo dwell times climb.
Veracruz. The main Gulf port and the natural choice for cargo from Europe, the US East Coast and South America, serving Mexico City, Puebla and the southeast.
Altamira, Tamaulipas. A Gulf port with strong chemical, petrochemical and bulk handling, well placed for the northeastern industrial belt around Monterrey.
Northern land borders. Nuevo Laredo is the highest-volume commercial crossing in the country and the spine of US-Mexico trade. Ciudad Juarez serves the Chihuahua manufacturing cluster, Tijuana and Mexicali serve Baja California and the western US, and Reynosa serves the Rio Grande Valley corridor.
The right answer is the gateway closest to your final destination with acceptable congestion - not the one with the cheapest ocean rate. A saving on the ocean leg is easily erased by extra inland kilometres, demurrage and a longer cash-conversion cycle.
What are the main freight corridors inside Mexico?
Pacific to Bajio. Manzanillo or Lazaro Cardenas to Guadalajara, Leon, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi. This is the import backbone for manufacturing and retail distribution.
Centre to north. Mexico City and Queretaro to Monterrey and onward to the Texas border. The dominant export and nearshoring corridor.
Gulf to centre. Veracruz to Puebla and Mexico City, serving European and East Coast trade.
Northwest. Tijuana, Mexicali and Hermosillo, tied closely to California and Arizona supply chains.
Southeast. Mexico City to Villahermosa, Merida and Cancun - longer, thinner lanes with less return freight and therefore less balanced pricing.
How long does it take to cross the country?
Typical full truckload scheduled transits:
Manzanillo to Guadalajara: same day to 1 day
Manzanillo to Mexico City: 1 to 2 days
Veracruz to Mexico City: 1 day
Mexico City to Monterrey: 1 to 2 days
Monterrey to Nuevo Laredo: same day
Mexico City to Merida: 2 to 3 days
Guadalajara to Tijuana: 3 to 4 days
Add consolidation time for LTL, and add border processing time for anything crossing north.
Why is nearshoring changing Mexican logistics?
Companies relocating production closer to the US market have concentrated new industrial capacity in the Bajio, Monterrey, Saltillo, Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana. Three consequences follow for anyone shipping in Mexico:
Warehouse space in those clusters is tight, so lead times for new capacity are longer than they used to be.
Capacity on the centre-to-north corridor is in high demand, particularly for equipment heading toward the Texas border.
Compliance expectations have risen. New entrants inherit customer requirements around traceability, certification and documented security programmes.
Planning space and capacity ahead of demand, rather than reacting to it, is now the difference between a stable and an unstable supply chain in these regions.
What is IMMEX and does it apply to me?
IMMEX is the Mexican programme that lets companies temporarily import raw materials, components and equipment for manufacturing or repair, with duties and taxes deferred, provided the goods are exported within the authorised period.
It matters if you manufacture or assemble in Mexico for export. It brings real cash-flow advantages and equally real obligations: inventory control systems, annual reporting and strict deadlines on temporary imports. Treat the compliance side as an operating cost from day one, because the penalties for losing track of temporary inventory are significant.
How do I plan a route across Mexico?
Start from the destination. Fix the final delivery point and work backwards to the gateway.
Compare landed cost, not freight cost. Ocean or border rate, port and terminal charges, expected dwell time, inland transport, and the cash tied up in transit.
Check equipment availability on the return leg. An unbalanced lane will show up in your rate whether or not anyone explains why.
Confirm compliance before dispatch. Pedimento, NOM requirements where applicable, and a valid CFDI with Complemento Carta Porte for the road leg.
Decide where inventory should sit. A cross-dock or warehouse near the gateway often beats moving every container deep inland.
Build a contingency gateway. Congestion, weather and labour events are normal; a pre-qualified alternative port turns a crisis into a re-route.
Frequently asked questions
Which is Mexico's largest port?
Manzanillo handles the highest container volume in the country, with Lazaro Cardenas the other major Pacific option and Veracruz the main Gulf port.
What is the busiest border crossing between Mexico and the United States?
Nuevo Laredo, in Tamaulipas, carries the largest share of commercial truck traffic between the two countries.
Can one carrier handle both the port move and inland delivery?
Yes. Single-carrier coverage from the port to the final destination removes handoffs, which is where most delays and damage originate.
How far in advance should I plan a cross-country shipment?
Allow a week for planning on long lanes and specialised equipment. Standard dry van moves on balanced corridors can normally be booked within a few days.
